The United Nations (UN) expressed their deep concern over the ongoing food scarcity in Somalia, in the Horn of Africa, urging the international community to take action to avoid a disaster.
This alert comes after the worst drought that the African country has faced in decades. The current drought and poor rains this year are causing failing crops and rising food prices.
According to the UN, the situation has left 386,000 children in acute need of life-saving treatment for severe malnutrition in the country.
Rania Dagash UNICEF Deputy Director for eastern and southern Africa explained: “The lives of children in the Horn of Africa are also at an increased risk because of the war in Ukraine and I think it’s important to emphasize this, because Somalia alone used to import 92% of its wheat from Russia and Ukraine, but now supply lines are blocked.”
The UN and the US-funded Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) reported that From 2010 to 2012, more than 260,000 people died due to starvation in Somalia, half of them were children under the age of five.
Currently Somalia is experiencing one of the worst droughts in nearly 40 years.
