Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced on May 29 that he has secured a “very favorable deal for Serbia” for supplies of natural gas, after a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Serbian announcement ignored Western sanctions against Moscow.
Serbia’s president told reporters on Sunday: “What I can tell you is that we have agreed on the main elements that are very favorable for Serbia,” adding “We agreed to sign a three-year contract, which is the first element of the contract that suits the Serbian side very well.”
According to the Kremlin’s official website, the conversation between Vladimir Putin and the president of Serbia exchanged opinions on several issues and agendas including ”steps to expand mutually beneficial trade and economic cooperation.” It was agreed also, in particular, that Russia will continue to supply natural gas to Serbia.
The exchange of views continued on several international topics: the situation in Ukraine and developments around Kosovo.
The mutual agreements reaffirmed the partnership between Russia and Serbia based on the traditionally close ties between the two countries.
Despite Vucic’s claims that he wants to take Serbia into the European Union, he has spent recent years strengthening ties with Serbia’s longtime ally Russia. The Serbian president has not joined Western sanctions against Russia and his government also refused to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
As reported by RFER, the European Union negotiators failed to reach a deal on ”an embargo of Russian oil” but will continue attempts to reach an accord before the beginning of an EU summit starting on May 30.
