The Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade, and International Cooperation of Suriname, Albert Ramdin, went on accompanied visits to explore the quality of the infrastructure for the development and production of fisheries in Dakhla, south of Morocco.
In a statement to MAP at the end of this visit, Albert Ramdin emphasized the importance of infrastructure that contains the region Dakhla-Oued Eddahab, saying that the purpose of this visit was to examine the possibilities of partnership in the fisheries sector, with a view to strengthening trade relations between Suriname and Morocco.
The head of Surinamese diplomacy also highlighted the opportunities offered in the export of seafood, stressing the need to take advantage of the Moroccan experience in this field.
In addition, he said that the opening of a Consulate General of his country in Dakhla marked a new era in the consolidation of bilateral economic and trade relations.
The official visited the cannery Rio de Oro, a subsidiary of the holding Atlader Derhem group, headed by Dahman Derhem.
The Rio de Oro fish cannery covers an area of 14,000 m2. It required an investment of between MAD 200 and 300 million, including the production unit, the fish dump and the fishing boat.
Rio de Oro is “an integrated project of freezing and fishmeal, including a trawler with a proper fishing quota, to ensure a sustainable and continuous level of supply,” says the site manager, who estimates the quota between 15,000 and 30,000 tons per year.
Nearly 300,000 cans are produced every day. 90% of the production is exported to Africa, Europe, and the Middle East.
Built in 2020, the plant is equipped with the latest technology. Some production lines are fully automated, “which is not the case for the entire production unit. This is a deliberate choice to create jobs,” said the director of the site where 500 people work.
Earlier that day, the Republic of Suriname opened a consulate general in Dakhla, marking its firm support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara.
The number of consulates opened in the southern provinces has now increased to 25 (13 in Dakhla and 12 in Laayoune).
On Wednesday, the Republic of Suriname inaugurated its embassy in Rabat, during a ceremony presided over by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans living abroad, Nasser Bourita, and his counterpart from Suriname.
