The Republic of Suriname is opening a consulate general in Dakhla, south of Morocco, announced the republic’s Foreign Affairs Minister while on his visit to Morocco.
Suriname’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Albert Ramdin, expressed his country’s “full support to the Moroccan autonomy plan proposal” this Wednesday, calling it “the only basis for a political solution to the regional dispute.”
Albert Ramdin reaffirmed “the Republic of Suriname’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over all its territory, in full respect of the Kingdom’s territorial integrity,” in a joint Moroccan-Suriname statement, issued after both counterparts met today in the Moroccan capital, Rabat.
24 countries have already opened consulates in the cities of Dakhla (12 countries) and Laayoune (12 countries), cementing their support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern territories.
During today’s talks, the Moroccan FM Nasser Bourita informed his counterpart of the latest developments of the Sahara issue and stressed the necessity of the international community’s support of the autonomy plan.
The Moroccan official reiterated the Kingdom’s commitment to the ongoing political process conducted under the exclusive auspices of the United Nations, adds the statement.
This position of Suriname is part of a larger momentum of support for Morocco’s territorial integrity, expressed by several countries around the world, especially in the Caribbean region.
A total of 12 countries out of 14 in this region have changed their positions in favor of Morocco on the issue of Western Sahara.
