Maradona’s jersey has been sold out for nearly $9.3 million, a record-breaking amount, according to the British auction house Sotheby’s.
Football star Diego Maradona wore the jersey during Argentina’s epic match against the English national team in the 1986 World Cup.
Maradona’s jersey sale took place on the auction house’s website on April 20, and ended Wednesday morning.
The British auction house has set the starting price at £4 million (over $5.2 million).
The blue jersey, bearing the number 10, was owned by the former English midfielder Steve Hodge. He had exchanged it with Maradona at the end of the match, won by Argentina (2-1), which remained one of the most controversial in the World Cup’s history.
Maradona’s Jersey broke the record for auctions of this type, noting that the highest amount was $5.6 million in 2019 for a jersey worn by American baseball legend Babe Ruth in late 1920s.
