The jersey worn by iconic football star Diego Maradona during Argentina’s epic match against the English national team in the 1986 World Cup, will be auctioned online.
The announcement was made by the British company Sotheby’s, based in New York, which will display it on its premises in London during the online sale from April 20 to May 4.
According to media reports, the starting price was set at 4 million pounds, equivalent to more than $ 5.2 million.
The blue jersey, bearing the number 10, was owned by the former English midfielder Steve Hodge. He had exchanged his with Maradona at the end of the match, won by Argentina (2-1), which remained one of the most controversial in the history of the World Cup.
In this highly contested match, Maradona made headlines by scoring two mythical goals, one with his hand, the other after dribbling the whole defense, including the acclaimed goalkeeper, Peter Shilton.
The shirt was entrusted to the National Football Museum in Manchester to be exhibited.
As a reminder, the record for auctions of this type was set in 2019 at $5.6 million for a jersey worn by American baseball legend Babe Ruth in the late 1920s.
