At least a hundred rallied on Wednesday night in Ceuta, in the surrounding Tarajal border crossing in protest against the delayed reopening of the land borders between Morocco and Spain, initially set for Thursday.
Ceuta National Police broke off the demonstration, as protesters marched the streets chanting “open the border.”
In Melilla, protesters closed up on the Beni Ansar crossing, calling on Spanish and Moroccan authorities to speed up the opening of the borders, as a car and passengers demonstrated in a number of the city’s neighborhoods.
protesters raised slogans, “Long live King Mohammed VI,” calling on the king to intervene after two years of closed borders.
An informed source told Hespress that the delayed border reopening is due to a lack of sufficient security forces, as most are preparing a security plan for Easter celebrations on April 17.
The source did not indicate when the reopening of the borders is expected.
The two years-long closure of borders has driven an increasing number of Spanish companies to declare bankruptcy after the transit of goods between Ceuta, Melilla, and Morocco was abruptly halted following the COVID-19 induced border closure.
Both cities have been living under economic stagnation for nearly two years now.
