Spain’s Foreign Affairs Ministry published Friday a complete Moroccan map, which included the kingdom’s southern provinces.
This move came after Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez met with King Mohammed VI Thursday, after arriving for a two-day visit.
The full map of Morocco was included on the website of the Spanish Foreign Affairs Ministry, without the line often seen separating Morocco and its Sahara, as was the case previously.
A meeting between King Mohammed VI and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has turned the page on the diplomatic spat over Western Sahara, triggered by the arrival of Polisario’s chief Ibrahim Ghali to Spain last year.
The two heads of states reopened key Ceuta and Melila cities, agreed to resume cooperation in migration and security and said bilateral relations will see a new light of day.
Pedro Sanchez left Rabat after having spent Thursday evening in the company of King Mohammed VI.
His arrival appeased the diplomatic spat through formal support of Morocco’s autonomy plan proposal for Western Sahara.
Although the decision remains contested with the Spanish legislative branch, Sanchez is confident that the parliament’s veto vote will not be an issue, telling journalists tonight that “what is really important for Morocco is what the president says.”
Both countries are working on strengthening diplomatic relations in different fields, including the reopening of maritime traffic and land borders.
Last month, Spain recognized Morocco’s autonomy plan on Western Sahara, after nearly a year of diplomatic differences.
