Morocco and Spain announced the gradual and imminent reopening of sea borders Thursday night, in addition to the borders of Spanish enclaves Ceuta and Melilla.

During a press conference held this evening in Rabat, Sanchez revealed the resumption of maritime transport between Morocco and Spain after a two-year hiatus, noting that the two countries had begun logistical preparations to launch “Operation Marhaba” for this year.

The Spanish Prime Minister pointed to “strengthening bilateral ties in all fields, including immigration, economy, security, education, culture, and sports,” stressing that “many vital points will be discussed soon at a high-level meeting between the Spanish and Moroccan government.”

Sanchez pointed out that “the new stage in the history of the two countries is based on a clear map of joint cooperation,” drawing attention to “the importance of the bilateral history between Spain and Morocco to face future challenges and strengthen the foundations of a true partnership for the twenty-first century.”

And he added that “the new phase of relations between Madrid and Rabat will contribute to ensuring the interests of both countries, as well as preserving the stability of the countries of the region,” noting that “Spain and the countries of the African continent share geography and interests of the economy, security, and environment.”

In a joint statement issued tonight, Morocco and Spain launched preparations for Operation Marhaba, while the working group on the delimitation of the maritime space on the Atlantic coast will be activated, with the aim of achieving tangible progress on the matter.

Discussions will also be initiated on the management of airspace, and cooperation in the migration field. In this context, the Moroccan-Spanish permanent team on immigration will meet soon.
