The European Commission announced on Monday a total budget of more than €405 million to fund 144 doctoral programs to train more than 1,500 PhDs and equip them with new skills.
According to the results of the call for proposals for doctoral networks, launched in 2021 by the Commission under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), 18 industrial PhDs will train PhDs and develop their skills outside academia and 10 joint PhDs will offer training leading to joint or multiple PhDs.
The selected projects will promote research in areas such as novel cancer research and treatments, renewable energy and climate change resilience.
“For years, the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions’ PhD networks have supported world-class PhD programs while creating sustainable collaborations within academia and with the non-academic world,” said Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth.
A major new impetus will be given to transnational research collaboration and the innovative training of a new generation of bright PhDs from around the world, she added.
These doctoral programs are implemented by international partnerships, covering nearly 1,160 organizations in 38 countries, including the participation of the private sector, especially small and medium-sized enterprises.
