On the occasion of the United States (U.S.) Secretary of State Anthony Blink’s visit to Morocco, the U.S. expressed on Monday, its appreciation of Morocco’s “clear” commitment to renewable energy, recognizing Morocco’s leadership in climate action.
In a statement, the U.S. Department of State noted that the Kingdom’s commitment to achieving 52% of renewable energy generation capacity by 2025 remains an “Astonishing achievement,” adding that it is “One that the world must take into account.”
The U.S. diplomatic instances acknowledged that “Morocco is a pioneer in the transition to renewable energy and climate action,” adding that “Renewable energy has become 45% of total electricity generation.”
They added that Morocco “is working to meet the U.S. government’s commitment to achieving net-zero carbon by 2050.”
The same source indicated that “Morocco and the United States are aware of the critical importance of working together to address the climate crisis,” noting that one of Morocco’s main climate concerns is water scarcity, given expectations of reduced rainfall and high drought rates.
Despite the harsh climate conditions and the shortage of rainfalls, Morocco remains one of the significant investors in limiting global warming and developing clean and sustainable policies, supporting the emergence of a robust circular economy, particularly in terms of energy.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit to Morocco follows the Negev Arab-Israeli Summit. The visit will last from the 28th until the 30th of this month, as Blinken is expected to meet with several Moroccan officials.
