US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s trip to Morocco, expected to last from March 28 to 30, will see the high ranking official meet with Moroccan FM, Nasser Bourita, and Head of Government Aziz Akhanouch, to discuss a variety of issues spanning from security, climate, COVID-19 response, and Western Sahara.

Blinken’s visit comes shortly after his attendance of the Negev Israeli-Arab Summit in the middle east alongside Bourita, and the “expansion of the circle of peace between Israel and other countries in the Middle East, South Asia, and beyond,” will be high up on this visit’s agenda.

According to a press release, the Secretary’s visit coincides with the final year of a five-year, $460 million contract administered by the US Millennium Challenge Corporation.

The plan aims to expand education and employment opportunities for youth across the Kingdom, as well as land productivity and land rights for women in rural areas.

“The United States recognizes the role played by Morocco in maintaining regional security and stability, as well as its contribution to peace and prosperity in the Middle East,” reads the statement.

Regarding Western Sahara, the State Department recalls that “the United States continues to view Morocco’s autonomy plan as serious, credible and realistic, and as a potential approach to meeting the aspirations of the people of the Sahara.”

The statement from Blinken’s department has the US reaffirmed its respect for Morocco’s territorial integrity, all while expressing its full support to the UN Envoy, De Mistura.

This meeting should also be an opportunity to exchange around the Abraham Accords, set up to consolidate the relationship and the various collaborations between Morocco and Israel.
