The air-land military exercise conducted by the Moroccan and French armies, “Chergui 2022,” in the region of Errachidia, ended this Friday, March 25.
The planning of this exercise has been jointly conducted between military officials of both countries since September 2021, said last Monday, a statement from the General Staff of the Royal Armed Forces (FAR).
The Franco-Moroccan cooperation included the participation of the 4th Air Combat Brigade of the Light Aviation of the Army (ALAT) in the exercise, which, according to the FAR, is conducted “as part of the missions of defense of territorial integrity, aimed at consolidating planning capabilities and development of technical and operational interoperability” with the French forces.
This exercise, which kicked off on March 1, was located along the border with Algeria, and included six helicopters, including Gazelles, Pumas and NH-90 Caimans, as well as elements of the French Marine troupes.
The French Army’s participation in this exercise has been very discreet until now. Only the 4th BAC made a reference to it on its Twitter account a few days ago.
As a reminder, the FAR air component uses Gazelles and Pumas, as does the ALAT. But it is also equipped with American-made helicopters, CH-47 Chinook acquired second-hand from the US Army in 2015, Bell 205, Bell 206 and Bell 2012.
Morocco has been hosting consecutive military maneuvers alongside its most important allies, in addition to Chergui 2022, Morocco conducted major multinational exercises alongside NATO ships as part of the “OpSeaGuardian” exercise, joining NATO countries in the Western Mediterranean, in addition to the reception of interception boats of the “Metal Shark” type after a planning meeting of the exercise “African Lion 2022.”
