Morocco will host the African Lion 2022 military exercises from June 20 to July 1, focused on anti-terrorist combat on land, air and sea space, in addition to decontamination protocols for nuclear, radiological, biological and chemical attacks and weapons.
Abd El Rahman Makkaoui, a military and strategic expert, said that this new exercise will unprecedentedly cover all combat areas, and “address all types of land, air and sea weapons that can be used in various spaces,” while taking into account “advanced automatic and electronic weapons.”
Makkaoui added, in a statement to Hespress AR, that “according to military sources, new aircrafts will be used during the upcoming maneuvers, such as the F-15 and F-18, stealth aircraft, aircrafts with electronic radars, as well as new weapons, most of which operate electronically and with certain codes.”
The participating delegations have yet to be revealed, although it is known that the exercise will take place under American supervision.
Sources close to United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) confirmed that the number of participants will be significant, and the maneuvers may see the participation of countries from Africa, Europe, Latin America, and Arab countries.
The security expert additionally explained that “the upcoming maneuvers will extend over a large area of the Kingdom, from Kenitra, west of Morocco, to Benguerir near Marrakech, reaching southern Agadir, Mahbas and areas in the country’s Desert.”
Authorities are currently holding meetings this week to coordinate the planned curricula and exercises, “to unify the operational mechanisms for the maneuvers,” says the expert.
The headquarters of the Moroccan Southern Region High Command will host a meeting for the master planning of the “African Lion 2022” exercise from January 24 to January 28, with the participation of various delegations.
Back in September, the Royal Armed Forces and the US Army concluded a six-year joint program to reduce chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats, with a budget of $16 million, in partnership with the US Defense Agency.
