North Korea has likely tested a new intercontinental ballistic missile, Japan’s Deputy Defense Minister Makoto Oniki warned, noting to reporters that it may be a new model because it flew an altitude more than the previous ICBM test-fire in November 2017 launched by North Korea.
The missile reached an altitude of over 6,000 kilometers, flew for around 71 minutes, traveled about 1,100 kilometers, landed in an exclusive economic zone in the Sea of Japan, about 150 km west of the Northern coast of Japan at the Hokkaido Oshima Peninsula.
South Korean deputy national security advisor Suh Choo-suk denounced the launch as “a clear violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions, and a reversal of the moratorium on ICBM launches, which North Korea had promised to the international community.”
South Korean President Moon Jae-in Moon stated as well that the decision of its northern neighbor was “a violation of the suspension of intercontinental ballistic missile launches that leader Kim Jong Un promised to the international community.”
