Riots ensued this Sunday at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat between football fans from the Royal Army Club and Maghreb Fez, leading up to 160 arrests, 90 of whom were minors.
The detained supporters were apprehended on suspicions of their involvement in starting the riots, “possession of knives, open drunkenness and stone throwing coupled with material damage to private and public property, and deliberately setting fire to a vehicle.”
85 policemen were injured, and 63 members of the force were transferred to Ibn Sina University Hospital to receive medical care, while 14 were kept in the Specialized Hospital, and 8 were transferred to the Military Hospital in Rabat, according to a statement from the Directorate General (DGSN).
National Security Services have additionally monitored the injury of 18 members of auxiliary forces, and 57 injured among stadium attendees, 34 of which received medical care on site, while the rest were transferred to the local public hospital.
Material losses have also been noted, with many of the stadium’s facilities, contents, and surrounding vehicles, both civilian and police cars, being severely damaged.
“All detainees have been subjected to judicial investigation procedures ordered by the competent Public Prosecution, to determine the level and degree of involvement of each one of the detainees in the riots,” said the DGSN.
Surveillance cameras are now being reviewed to determine the degree of involvement of the detainees, as well as identify more perpetrators.
These riots come only a week after the government has finally allowed fans back into stadiums, after a little over two years of COVID-19.
