YouTube banned the broadcasts, on Tuesday, of Russian state-controlled media RT and Sputnik across Europe, according to German Press Agency Dpa.

“Due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, we are blocking YouTube channels linked to RT and Sputnik in Europe with immediate effect,” Youtube’s spokesperson said on Tuesday.

The spokesperson explained that it will take some time for the procedures to be implemented from a technical point of view, and said, “Our teams continue to monitor the situation in order to behave as soon as possible.”

RT and Sputnik face frequent criticism in Western Europe for serving as Kremlin propaganda outlets. Among the main accusations is that they spread misinformation commissioned by the Russian government to justify the Russian military operations in Ukraine.

EU authorities imposed a ban on broadcasting RT and Sputnik at the end of last week, but they are still working out the details of how the ban will be implemented.
