Transport professionals on Thursday staged nationwide protests to deplore high fuel prices and appeal the government for measures that would alleviate high costs of transport.
Protesters told Hespress journalists present on the ground that their mobilization aims to raise alarm on“the skyrocketing fuel prices, which greatly affected road transport professionals.”
They called the government to “implement ceiling prices of fuel, while looking for a way to alleviate pressure on professionals,” according to Union officials.
The transport sector, unsupported by subsidies, is feeling the burn of inflation that reached a rate of 7.1% in November, the highest across all sectors.
Its professionals, from cab drivers to international transport are planning protests and strikes in March against what they call the “government’s policy of discrimination.”
Government seeks solutions
On Thursday, the Minister of Transport and Logistics, Mohamed Abdel Jalil, held a meeting with representatives of the Transport Federation belonging to the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises and discussed a number of issues submitted by transport professionals.
Discussions included ways to confront the high cost of fuel, as well as providing financial support to the transportation sector.
The president of the Transport Federation stressed that “the transportation sector is a vital sector in the economy, but it suffers from arbitariness and absence of supervision.”
He said that “the dialogue with the Minister of Transport and Logistics was serious, effective and honest on both sides.”
The same spokesman indicated that “the dialogue will continue to come up with appropriate solutions for the transport sector.”
