The Health Ministry said this Tuesday that Morocco has moved from the high-risk red level to the orange level during the last week, as new Omicron infections decreased by 50% nationwide.

Mouad Merabet, the coordinator of the National Center for Public Emergency Operations at the Ministry of Health, reported in his bimonthly report on the epidemiological situation in Morocco that five consecutive weeks of decreasing cases helped the country move from the high red to an orange risk level.

The Health official said COVID-19 cases will decrease even further, but this does not mean a transition to zero level of spread, he stressed, adding, the virus will remain and continue weakly, with the possibility of infection and death.

The Omicron variant dominates 100% of new cases, while the sub-variant BA.1 moved from 14.9% to 7% in the last week, which is the lowest rate recorded in six weeks, Merabet specified.

“The reproduction rate is set at 0.80 nationwide, which is less than 1, which means the country entered the descent phase of the virus,” he said.

As for deaths, after a two-week peak from January 24 to February 6, their number decreased by 18.6% to record 188 new deaths on average, he added.

In terms of vaccination, vaccinated people with only the first shot reached 67.4%, ahead of fully vaccinated people with 2 shots r 63.1%, and then vaccinated people with the third booster shots 14.1%, according to the Health Ministry’s data.

The Health Ministry called on citizens once again to receive their COVID-19 shots in order to achieve a herd immunity system nationwide.
