The high-level segment of the first international “One Ocean Summit,” designed to mobilize the international community for the preservation of the oceans, launched this Friday, February 11 in Brest, northwestern France, with the participation of Morocco.

The Kingdom is represented at this three-day international event, which began Wednesday, February 9, by the Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, who leads a high-level delegation. Akhannouch was welcomed on his arrival at the event by French President Emmanuel Macron.

The head of government is taking part in this high-level segment, which is attended in person, or by video conference and video messages, by over thirty heads of state and government, as well as leaders of UN and international organizations, including UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and the Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay.

Scheduled from February 9 to 11, at the initiative of France as part of its presidency of the Council of the European Union, in cooperation with the United Nations, the One Ocean Summit should give a “strong political impetus” to the European and international agenda of maritime issues.

One of the highlight causes of the summit is to bring to a successful conclusion the multilateral negotiations that impact the ocean in preparation for the “United Nations Ocean” conference, scheduled for late June 2022 in Lisbon.

During a session entitled “Protecting and restoring marine ecosystems and promoting sustainable fisheries,” Akhannouch, accompanied by the President of Tanzania, Samia Solo, the President of French Polynesia Edouard Fritsch, and the President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, outlined the efforts made by Moroccan authorities in the framework of the supervision of the fishing sector.

Today, 95% of the fishery resources caught in Morocco are monitored by management plans.

Akhannouch also stressed, during this session, chaired by Macron, the “great progress” made by Morocco through the plan “Halieutis” which has achieved “positive results” especially along the Atlantic coast.

Since Wednesday, nearly 400 experts, NGOs, and political leaders from around the world are working on crucial issues for the preservation of seas and oceans.

According to the organizers, the Summit will allow participating delegations to share knowledge and cross approaches, especially by integrating climate change, to better anticipate oceanic crises as well as technological, scientific and environmental transformations.

The summit will end with the announcement of “ambitious commitments” to protect the oceans.
