Only 17 percent of adult Moroccan women have a bank account

A study conducted by Bank Al-Maghrib and the United Nations Development Program showed that only 29 percent of Moroccans have a mobile payment account, despite the widespread use of mobile phones.

The study on financial inclusion, with figures collected in 2019, indicated that only 17 percent of adult women have a bank account, compared to 41 percent of men, representing a large gender gap, according to the study. 34% of unemployed men have bank accounts, compared to 14% of women,

Disparities extend to internet use, with as 21 percent of the population do not use it according to 2021 figures, and 36 percent do not have basic knowledge about the use of new technologies.

The Covid-19 crisis drove up the use of mobile phones and increased the demand for electronic wallets, which moved from 1.4 million wallets at the end of the year 2020 to 3.4 million at the end of October 2021.

The e-commerce sector’s contribution to Morocco’s national economy does not exceed 0.6% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), according to data provided by Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour.

But the outbreak of the pandemic in the country, e-commerce has witnessed remarkable growth, and demand increased among Moroccan consumers, as its volume in 2020 amounted to about MAD 6 billion, increasing by 25% compared to 2019.

In 2021, online performance grew by 45 percent in terms of the number of transactions, and 28.1 percent in terms of the total amount.

With internet access rapidly increasing in the North African country, the number of digital buyers keeps climbing every year. Last year, the Center recorded about 20 million transactions, with a value of nearly 7.7 billion dirhams.
