The World Health Organization (WHO) says it is time for countries to lift or loosen recently imposed travel restrictions related to Omicron.
Travel bans are “are not effective in suppressing international spread,” said WHO’s International Health Regulations Emergency Committee said during their most recent meeting.
“The failure of travel restrictions introduced after the detection and reporting of the omicron variant to limit the international spread of omicron demonstrates the ineffectiveness of such measures over time,” the committee’s report stated.
As of January 12, Omicron officially surpassed Delta and became the dominant variant of Covid-19, circulating at a 58.5% rate, said World Health Organization.
Omicron represented 208,000 of the 357,000 samples studied worldwide in the last 30 days.
The Delta mutant, the predominant variant during almost all of 2021, was found in 147,000 samples, or 41% of cases, as of mid-January.
