Government spokesman Mustapha Baitas reiterated plans “to reopen the air borders of the kingdom in the coming weeks,” during a press briefing held on Thursday, January 21, at the end of the weekly Government Council.

Baitas said that “the government is reflecting on this issue and will take the necessary decisions depending on the evolution of the pandemic and the recommendations of the scientific commission,” adding that the executive “hopes to be able to reopen air borders in the coming weeks.”

Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch had stated this week that he is “optimistic” about the reopening of the borders but has yet to provide a date.

It was in response to a question about the interaction of Morocco with Spain’s successive “good faith” statements regarding the resolution of the bilateral crisis between both kingdoms,

Baitas said that “King Mohammed VI also spoke in the speech of the revolution of the king and the people of the importance of strategic relations between Spain and Morocco,” adding that the monarch defined three years ago, in previous royal letters, the frame of reference of the foreign relations of our country with other groups of countries,” in reference to parties’ respect to Morocco’s territorial integrity.

The minister reported that the king had identified two basic principles, namely ambition, and clarity, he added that “the ambition is there, as Spain has expressed its ambition, but for this ambition to be strengthened, we need a lot of clarity.”

Mustapha Baitas additionally spoke about the recent murder of a French tourist in Tiznit, south of Morocco, and the attack on a Belgian tourist in Agadir by the same individual, calling it an “individual and isolated act.”

During the press briefing, Baitas said that “such things happen in all countries, not only in Morocco.” He added that what happened is not a phenomenon, but an isolated incident.

The government spokesman said that the crime is related to “the psychological state of the perpetrator” and that the response to the legal debate that arises is “the responsibility of specialists in criminal and administrative law and is the responsibility of the state.”

He concluded by saying that “if these isolated incidents become a phenomenon, then the government must intervene to review the criminal policy.”
