Morocco’s private doctors on strike to protest social security contributions
Thursday 20 January 2022 - 17:30

Morocco’s private sector doctors have gone on strike starting this Thursday, January 20, to demand fair health coverage and to protest the government’s “failure” to review their national reference tariff for universal social security.

Nationwide, private medical clinics in various fields are closed today, with the exception of emergency units, as the professionals demand lowering their contribution to the social security system.

Union bodies representing private-sector doctors stated that they have been “peacefully” protesting and voicing dissatisfaction for nearly two months while practicing their profession. But after being met with “silence and disinterest” from the government, they decided to halt activity in protest.

Dr. Ibrahim Karad, a specialist in dentistry, explained to Hespress AR that “this protest came as a result of the government’s failure to respond to the messages sent by the medical unions throughout the previous period.”

A member of the Federal Council of Dental Syndicates in Morocco additionally told Hespress AR that “the government did not take into account the health coverage file and the situation of the vulnerable group of new doctors who will be obligated to pay an exorbitant monthly contribution in order to benefit from the coverage.”

Unions are demanding a governmental response, and promised nationwide marches in protest if their demands are not heard, one of which is planned in the capital, Rabat.
