Moroccan customers are increasingly using the Jumia mobile application for ordering a wide variety of products online, according to Jumia’s report, entitled “Jumia Africa e-Commerce Index 2021,” published on January 18.
The report was released by the e-commerce platform “Jumia” in partnership with the United Nations Organization for Trade and Economic Development (UNCTAD), the International Finance Corporation (IFC), and the “MasterCard” group.
The report said a significant number of local traders and craft workers in Morocco were able to sell their products due to this e-commerce platform.
Although Covid-19 has caused major setbacks on international supply and logistics, Jumia has shown strong demand for everyday products, including consumer goods, said the report.
“We have noticed the purchasing behavior of Moroccans has changed during the total lockdown, by ordering often everyday products and consumer goods,” said Jumia Morocco’s Director-General, Larbi Belghiti Alaoui in the report.
Director-General of Trade at the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Abdelouahed Rahal, also stated in the report, “the government seeks to create an innovation ecosystem centered around digital technology, aiming to serve the trade and distribution sector, especially e-commerce.
This trade official stated that the country has put into place several efforts, in cooperation with institutional partners as well as the private sector, aiming to encourage digital use, while ensuring the protection of interests of both traders, and consumers.
The report revealed that the pandemic has significantly resulted in speeding up innovation in the country, as consumers have changed their consumption behaviors, switching into the adoption of contactless options as well as using the e-commerce platform even further.
Jumia is the leading pan-African e-commerce platform, has points of sale in 5 regions of Africa, 11 countries, including Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Kenya, Egypt, Uganda, Senegal, Ghana, South Africa, Nigeria, and Côte d’Ivoire.
