Omicron has officially surpassed Delta and become the dominant variant of Covid-19, circulating at a 58.5% rate, said World Health Organization on Wednesday.
Omicron represented 208,000 of the 357,000 samples studied worldwide in the last 30 days.
The Delta mutant, the predominant variant during almost all of 2021, was found in 147,000 samples, or 41% of cases.
The WHO said early studies showed there was a reduced risk of hospitalization from the variant, first identified in southern Africa and Hong Kong in November, compared with Delta.
Here also appears to be a lower risk of severe complications in both younger and older people, based on studies from South Africa and England.
The WHO warned of a “tsunami” of cases as infections soar to record levels driven by both Omicron and Delta, healthcare systems are overwhelmed, and governments struggle to tame the virus.
