An inflatable boat carrying 1.64 tons of cannabis resin was intercepted by Spanish authorities off the coast of Tenerife, a Spanish island near West Africa during New Year’s Eve.
According to Karanermarkt, a German online newspaper, a helicopter of the Guardia Civil spotted the boat 14 kilometers off the island, with three people on board.
According to the report, the Moroccan smugglers, aged 32 and 36, along with a 16-year-old, threw 46 bales of 1.640 tonnes of cannabis into the Atlantic Ocean after spotting the Coast Guard ship.
The suspects tried to escape but were quickly apprehended by the Spanish police, while divers tried to retrieve the drugs from the Atlantic.
The smugglers were caught on in Santa Cruz, Tenerife, and taken to court for trial.
The COVID-19 pandemic currently closing routes and borders has forced Moroccan drug traffickers to seek alternate routes and unconventional means of transporting cannabis abroad.
In Morocco’s most recent annual report, the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) reported that security forces handled 82,950 cases of drug possession and trafficking in 2021.
Statistics from the DGSN state that 103,589 of the people arrested were referred to the court by the police, including 261 foreigners.
There was an increase in cocaine seized in the annual report, while hashish seized decreased by 12% compared to the previous year.
