The families of Moroccan detainees in unstable hotbeds across the middle east are still waiting for the government’s interference to rescue their relatives, who have been stuck in camps and prisons spread across Iraqi, Syrian, and Turkish soil.
Families are once again complaining about the lack of governmental action after a follow-up committee on the situation issued its report and recommendations to the executive.
A significant number of Moroccan terrorists have been killed in conflict hotspots since 2011, as competent authorities counted 250 detained ISIS-affiliated fighters.
According to a report dating back to July 2021, 232 Moroccan nationals are detained in Syria, 12 in Iraq, and 6 in Turkey.
The report also accounted for 138 women who were forced to move to hotbeds by their husbands, uprooting them from their nuclear families to fight with the militias.
The same data says that 134 of the detained women are held in the camps guarded by Kurdish forces, in addition to approximately 400 minors.
Only 153 of the declared detained minors were born in Morocco, while the rest were born in the aforementioned countries or in European countries.
Maryam Zahroun, general secretary of the National Coordination of Families of Trapped and Detained Persons in Syria and Iraq, said that the extended families of the detainees “rejoiced upon hearing of the creation of the special committee,” but added that they are now “disappointed” at the lack of follow up on this file.
In a statement to Hespress AR, Zahroun stated that “neither the Ministry of Interior nor the Ministry of Foreign Affairs experienced a change of ministers, the head of the committee is now Minister of Justice,” raising questions about the freezing of procedures regarding these detainees.
The families are calling for the establishment of a committee to follow up on the case and further actions to repatriate the detainees.
According to Hespress AR sources, the newly elected government has yet to tackle this file, as discussions on the subject have yet to be resumed.
