Fatima-Zahra El Mansouri, Morocco’s Minister of Housing, has outlined a comprehensive plan for reclaiming Casablanca’s remaining slums.
In a meeting held on January 3 with the governor of Casablanca’s prefecture, El Mansouri spoke before several actors and local stakeholders. According to a statement from the ministry, she emphasized Morocco’s efforts to provide decent housing conditions for its citizens living in slums.
The minister added that the initiative would rehouse families living in slums while implementing the recommendations of the New Development Model (NDM). The recommendations seek to ensure that housing, employment opportunities, and public facilities are available in partnership with the private sector and local stakeholders.
The NDM sets forth a vision for sustainable development and economic growth in Morocco that requires the collaboration of the public and private sectors.
The “Cities Without Slums” project was launched by King Mohammed VI in 2004, following the aftermath of the Casablanca terrorist attacks in 2003, where 12 suicide bombers from Sidi Moumen, a poor suburb of Casablanca, killed 45 people and injured hundreds of others.
Families with low incomes in Morocco can take part in the program, which aims to provide decent housing.
The “Cities Without Slums” initiative was relaunched in early 2021 with the aim of rehousing 22,000 households in the Skhirat-Temara area to benefit almost 100,000 people in less than three years.
