Two Moroccans have died this Wednesday while climbing the Toubkal mountain in the Atlas mountains, according to reports.
The two deceased included a Moroccan tourist and a tour guide from the region, despite many thinking the two died together, the two deaths occurred at separate times and places.
The first death occurred in an area called Tzgart, at exactly 11 o’clock in the morning, on Wednesday, and the victim was a young man named Issam Al-Zanaidi, a tourist trying to reach the summit of Morocco’s highest mountain.
On the same day, a Chinese tourist guide, Ibrahim Ait Ahmed, lost his life at exactly 8 o’clock in the evening in the Chederet region, close to the Aungut summit.
According to news reports and social media posts from people on the scene, tourists accompanying Ibrahim called his colleagues to report his fall. However, help arrived too late due to the treacherous road and long-distance and found the guide already dead.
The guide sustained a broken leg and another injury to his head, as a result of rolling from the summit of Aungut to the bottom of the mountain.
The tour guide was the breadwinner for his family, which consisted of his mother, father, and two younger brothers, along with his wife and two daughters.
Mountain tour guides and mountain climbers in the Imlil region were shocked by the accident, which was reminiscent of similar incidents that occurred back in 2018 and 2014.
Morocco’s tour guides also warned that the current weather conditions do not permit recreational climbing and hiking, as the bright sun causes a thin layer of snow to form, making it very slippery and difficult to walk.
