The African continent recorded, as of Wednesday evening, a total of 9,551,909 confirmed COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began, according to the African Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).
A total of 227,872 deaths were reported on the same date, while the number of recoveries reached 8,579,580, according to Africa CDC, which falls under the African Union.
CDC Africa said South Africa is the most affected country on the continent with more than 3.42 million confirmed cases of COVID-19.
South Africa is reporting 11,505 new cases on average each day, almost 50% of the peak, according to Reuters’ latest COVID Tracker, released this Thursday.
On November 25, South Africa’s scientists announced that they’ve detected a new COVID-19 variant, following the surge in the number of cases, naming it B.1.1.529, most commonly known as the Omicron variant.
The Southern parts of Africa lead the number of cases, followed by North Africa, East Africa, and Central Africa, according to the same source.
