Morocco is anticipating that the new Omicron variant, which has been spreading rapidly across the country, will soon be the dominant Covid-19 variant in the upcoming days, and the North-African country has advised citizens to receive the third dose to strengthen collective immunity, says Morocco’s Minister of Health, Khalid Ait Taleb.
In an interview with a local news outlet, the health minister explained that Omicron can spread five times faster than the Delta variant, however, its lethality rate was lower.
In an effort to contain the virus, Morocco has banned all incoming passenger flights since November 29 and imposed restrictions including a night curfew beginning on December 31.
Experts at the Ministry of Health have predicted that the Omicron wave will last shorter compared to the previous variants, but it will affect a larger number of people due to its high contagious nature.
Health officials have shortened the interval between the administration of the second jab and the booster shot to only 4 months, compared to 6 months initially, and urged people who received the Jansen vaccine to receive a booster shot as well after 4 months.
Currently, Morocco has vaccinated 24.5 million people, making it the largest vaccination campaign in Africa, however, only 2.86 million people have taken the booster shot so far.
