France recorded 179,807 new cases in the past 24 hours, a new all-time high as the country faces the fifth wave of the pandemic.
According to France’s public health agency, 242 people have died in hospitals due to the COVID-19 virus, while 17,405 patients have been hospitalized, including 2,110 on the previous day.
Additionally, 3,416 patients are dealing with severe symptoms in intensive care services, including 417 who arrived on Tuesday, according to the same source.
COVID-19 cases in France are at their peak, with the daily average number being 87,500, according to Reuters’ latest COVID Tracker, released on Wednesday, December 29.
As of Monday, France adopted new health restrictions in order to curb the spread of the virus as well as the surge of the new Omicron variant nationwide, including a mandate for remote work to its citizens effective from January 3.
Remote work will be required at least three days a week for those who are capable, while public gatherings will be limited to 2,000 people indoors, and to 5,000 people for outdoor events, said French Prime Minister Jean Castex.
