A new Museum of Contemporary Art opened its doors this Thursday, December 24, in Tangier, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the National Foundation of Museums (FNM).

Located within the former Kasbah prison, the establishment is now open to event hosting and regional cultural programs, taking up over 1225 square meters.

Named “the Museum of the Kasbah, contemporary art space,” the new museum has been fully restored and made available to the Foundation, transforming the previously morose space into a “place of hope,” said the president of the FNM, Mehdi Qotbi.

The Kasbah prison is a historic monument built in the 17th century and is one of the essential components of the Kasbah Palace in Tangier. It remained functional until the early 1970s, serving as a civilian prison.

The space has been rehabilitated and refurbished as part of the project to rehabilitate and enhance the medina of Tangier, which is being supervised by the Wilaya of Tangier, with the contribution of the Ministry of Culture, the Agency for the Promotion and Development of the North (APDN) and the FNM.

The opening ceremony for the new cultural center was attended by the President of the Council of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, Omar Moro, and various intellectuals, artists, and cultural actors of the city.

The event marked the opening of the inaugural exhibition, “The School of the North,” which pays tribute to the artists of the artistic school of the North of Morocco, and their contributions to the national artistic canon.

The exhibition reflects the cultural mix and diversity of the regional art scene with over 70 pieces, including the works of Mohamed Serghini, Mohamed Atallah, Mohamed Yacoubi, Mohamed Chabâa, Saad Ben Cheffaj, Mekki Meghara, Mohamed Melehi, and Abdelkrim Ouazzani, among others.

The director of the Museum Mohammed VI of Modern and Contemporary Art, and responsible for the renovation of museums at the FNM, Abdelaziz El Idrissi, stressed that the structure was designed to meet the objective of accessibility for all.

With multiple elevators and ramps, the foundation made sure to make the space as inclusive, accessible, and multi-purpose as possible.
