A Tunisian court on Wednesday sentenced in absentia former president Moncef Marzouki to four years in prison for criticizing President Saied and calling for protests.
Marzouki was found guilty on the charges of “assaulting the external security of the state”, according to the state news agency TAP.
The former president previously criticized Saied, describing his seizure of powers as a coup, calling for protests against him and urging that a major international meeting of French speaking countries be moved from Tunisia.
Saied however maintains that his move to seize executive power, suspend parliament and change the constitution is not a coup, claiming he acted to end the country’s political paralysis and promising a referendum next year on a new constitution followed by parliamentary elections.
Marzouki was appointed interim president, overseeing the transition to a new constitution in 2014 following Tunisia’s 2011 revolution.
