Morocco’s foreign ministry said today it welcomed recent comments by the German government that seek to overcome the diplomatic row between the two countries that lasted for months.
“The Kingdom of Morocco appreciates the positive announcements and constructive positions recently made by the new German federal government,” wrote the foreign affairs ministry on its Twitter account.
Germany’s recent amiable statements published on the official website of the German foreign ministry “make it possible to envisage a revival of bilateral cooperation and a return to normalcy of the diplomatic representations of the two countries in Rabat and Berlin,” added the tweet.
In March 2021, Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced cutting diplomatic ties with the European country due to a “deep misunderstanding” with Germany on fundamental issues of concern to the Kingdom of Morocco.
Germany celebrated normalizing ties between Israel and Morocco under Abraham accords, however, the European country condemned the American recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara.
Morocco had condemned Germany’s position as hostile.
Germany said recently under new chancellor Olaf Scholz it supports the efforts of the Personal Envoy General Staffan de Mistura to achieve a political outcome that is fair and acceptable to all on the basis of the United Nations Security Council resolution, in which Morocco made an important contribution, adding that the federal government’s position in this regard has remained unchanged for decades.
Germany’s foreign ministry hailed the Economic and trade relations between the two countries as remarkable. In 2019, Germany was in 7th place in the Moroccan trade balance, and in the same year, it imported from Morocco 1.4 billion euros of goods and exported 2.2 billion euros.
