A framework cooperation agreement on the establishment of the technological platform “Green H24” dedicated to R&D and innovation in the field of green hydrogen and its applications (“Power-To-X”: PtX), was signed at the campus of Benguerir of the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), between the Institute of Research in Solar Energy and New Energies (IRESEN), the UM6P and the OCP Group.
This infrastructure, the first in Africa, aims to play a major role in the industrial deployment of the green hydrogen sector and its applications in Morocco, says a statement by IRESEN, noting that this structure will also investigate, test, demonstrate, adapt to the local context, and scale up the innovative technologies of this promising sector.
Alongside the National Commission of Green Hydrogen, and the Cluster “Green H2 Maroc”, Green H2A is a structuring link of the ecosystem of Green Hydrogen in our country, adds the same source.
“Green H2A” will accompany the academic and socio-economic world and will contribute to the emergence of the sector through, in particular, an exploration of the potential and R&DI and industrial opportunities of the PtX sector for Morocco, by developing pilot and demonstration projects on a pre-industrial scale, technological support and decision support for public policies and national and international industrialists, particularly in terms of standards and certification.
Quoted in the statement, Abdelaziz El Mellah, Executive Director of OCP Group, said that “the production of green hydrogen is an added value to the production of electricity from renewable sources, especially its transformation into products with higher energy density and high economic potential, which will meet a significant global demand for green molecules to get closer to carbon neutrality, adding that “this represents a real opportunity for Morocco and a potentially promising market for our industrial group”.
For his part, the Director General of IRESEN, Badr Ikken, stressed that “hydrogen is a key link in the energy transition. It is an energy vector with great potential that is part of both economic growth and sustainable development,” adding that “this platform will accelerate the deployment and scaling of this industry in our country”.
The President of UM6P, Hicham El Habti, stressed that the UM6P welcomes the establishment of this infrastructure “which will be a real tool for creating value and knowledge, a real means of training and qualification of our human resources”.
