Morocco and the French Development Agency (AFD) have signed two financing agreements for a total amount of 200 million euros, an approximate MAD 2 billion to support two projects related to basic universal health care and gender equality.

The two financing agreements were signed this Tuesday, December 7 in Rabat. The AFD, a public financial institution that works to fight poverty and promote sustainable development goals in France and abroad, is providing a 150 million euro investment to accompany the kingdom towards the generalization of compulsory health insurance and the strengthening of its health system.

This financing will help reduce inequalities in access to health care by supporting the inclusion of an additional 22 million people in the national compulsory health insurance system, with the aim of achieving universal health coverage.

Similarly, this support will help strengthen the supply of healthcare at the national level and through specific mechanisms, such as coordinated care pathways and e-health, telehealth tools in two specific yet undisclosed regions of Morocco.

An additional grant of 4 million euros accompanies this first loan, for the benefit of expertise exchange from the French public agency for technical cooperation.

The second funding, amounting to 50 million euros, aims to reduce inequalities between women and men through the institutionalization and operationalization of Gender Responsive Budgeting (GRB) within the Moroccan state budget.

The agreements were initialed by Minister Delegate to the Minister of Economy and Finance, in charge of the Budget, Fouzi Lekjaa, and the Director of the French Development Agency (AFD) in Morocco, Mihoub Mezouaghi, in the presence of the French Ambassador to Morocco, Hélène Le Gal, and the Minister of Health and Social Protection, Khalid Aït Taleb.
