A group of armed men on Thursday stormed a court in Sehba, southwestern Libya, before the son of slain ruler Mouammar el Kadhafi was to appeal a decision that disqualified him from running in the high stakes presidential elections next month.

The Libyan ministry of interior called the gunmen “a group of outlaws,” who “terrified members of the judiciary, employees, and citizens by brandishing weapons, threatening and intimidating those inside the court, and expelling them outside.”

Both the Libyan government and the UN mission in Libya condemned the attack that threatens an essential part of Libya’s transition to democracy, following the decade-old conflict which tore the oil-rich nation since the uprising that toppled el Kadhafi in 2011.

Seif al-Islam, a wanted man by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes, was among 25 candidates whose bids have been rejected.

According to the HNEC commission, the candidacies were rejected on legal grounds, as well as based on information from officials.
