US President Joe Biden will hold a meeting with African leaders in 2022, to focus on building global partnerships and alliances.
According to a White House statement released on Friday, this summit will “serve as an opportunity to collaborate with African counterparts on key areas the United States and Africa define as critical for the future of the continent and our global community.”
The announcement came as US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken visited three African countries as part of a two-day African tour.
“President Biden intends to host the US-Africa Leaders Summit to drive the kind of high-level diplomacy and engagement that can transform relationships and make effective cooperation possible,” Blinken said.
Blinken is the highest-ranking Biden administration official to visit sub-Saharan Africa.
The American official has vowed a US approach to Africa which will treat the continent as a “major geopolitical power,” boosting development without “strings” often attached to “coercive” deals.
The Biden administration, often criticized for its inattentiveness to Africa, is striking a different tone from President Trump’s approach to the continent.
Trump’s travel ban from six African countries has been rescinded, and the US has sent diplomats to Ethiopia and Nigeria to try and resolve conflicts.
