The Moroccan constitutional court has stripped 16 MPs of their positions, for serving positions deemed incompatible with their mandate.
The decision comes after the constitutional court received over 60 appeals back in October, requesting rulings related to the election of members of the House of Representatives.
Accumulation of political mandates in Morocco is regulated, and as long as constitutional requirements are met, elected officials can occupy more than one function.
Among the representatives were ministers, regional and communal leaders.
6 ministers were relieved of their parliamentary seats for occupying the presidency of various regions across the country.
Minister of Justice Abdelatif Ouahbi, Minister of Equipment Nizar Baraka, Minister of Agriculture Mohammed Sadiki, Minister of Youth and Culture Mehdi Bensaid, Minister of territorial management Fatima-Zahra Mansouri, and government spokesman, Mustafa Baitas, were stripped of their parliamentary seats for accepting governmental positions.
Other relieved MPs were heading communes whose inhabitants exceeded the constitutional limit, which is set at a population of 300,000.
Replacement will be open to the person next in line, having gathered the second largest number of votes, and should be fully implemented in three months.
