The 2022 edition of the International Book and Publishing Fair (SIEL) will be held, exceptionally, in Rabat, instead of Casablanca, Minister of Culture, Youth and Communication, Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid, announced on Thursday.
The relocation of “the Salon”, which was suspended for two years due to the pandemic, came as a part of the city of lights’ new status as the capital of African culture, said Bensaid during the presentation of the sector budget for 2022 of his department to the House of Representatives.
Next year, in 2022, the Moroccan kingdom’s capital will hold several events, including the book’s fair, celebrating its new fame.
The space usually dedicated to the organization of SIEL in Casablanca is currently operated as a field hospital to accommodate patients with covid-19 and will therefore not be available to host the Salon.
Bensaid then indicated that the 2022 finance bill allocated a budget of around MAD12 million to SIEL, adding that this amount is “insufficient” and that the ministry will work to mobilize additional resources for financing the event.
