The Moroccan Association for Human Rights submitted on Wednesday, a petition to the first president of the Court of Cassation, aiming to overturn the government’s decision issued on October 18, to mandate the vaccine pass in public and private places.
The association said in a press release that its legal move sights “to plead in the face of decisions and actions that would constitute a violation of a human right.”
Mustafa Brahma, the head of the Democratic Nahj Party, explained, in an interview with Hespress, that the vaccination pass is rejected as it abuses Moroccans’ rights.
“The authorities are taking advantage of the health emergency’s law in order to limit the freedoms of Moroccans,” he continued, “70 percent of citizens received their doses, and they must return to normal life.”
The vaccine pass mandate in Morocco increased the vaccination rates in the country by 10 fold within a week, as unvaccinated citizens rushed to vaccination centers after the vaccine pass became compulsory in hotels, tourist establishments, restaurants, cafes, closed spaces, shops, sports halls, and Hamams starting October 21.
While many citizens celebrated the mandate as a step forward to go back to normal, opposition leaders and human rights groups questioned the constitutional legality of the compulsory pass and its outcomes on the freedom of citizens.
Morocco continues to bid on its national vaccination campaign, in an effort to contain the virus and prevent a future breakdown.
According to the ministry’s latest tally, more than 24 mln citizens received their first Covid-19 vaccine shot, while 22,179,591 are fully inoculated. The Kingdom has also administered 1,485,500 booster shots, too far.
