Morocco’s health pass agenda is in danger of being engulfed in frictions with labor unions that are increasingly unionizing over rejection of the pass, and its implications for workers.
As the application of the vaccine pass expands, the country’s largest union, the Moroccan Labor Confederation rallied behind unvaccinated workers who were sacked from their workplaces under the new pass mandate.
The confederation raised alarm over the negative repercussions, violations and abuses resulting from the pass, which is now mandated on employees of public administrations, territorial groups and institutions.
Complaints on social media are rampant with workers who say their employers are preventing them from accessing workspaces, many of whom faced arbitrary expulsion for lacking vaccination proof.
The confederation rejected “the use of the state of health emergency to harm the rights of employees and restrict their individual and union freedoms.”
Labor organizations find the vaccine proof to be flouting the law. Ali Lotfi, head of the Democratic Organization of Labor says “the arbitrary dismissal decisions against some workers are illegal, and do not have a mandatory nature,” noting that “the Labor Code does not give the employer the right to take arbitrary decisions such as preventing workers from entering the workshop.”
He stressed that “this behavior falls under the category of abuse of power.”
