The Australian government is offering a payment of 5,000 Australian dollars (USD3,700) to encourage partners to quit violent relationships.
The two-year trial beginning on Tuesday will allow eligible people from all genders to receive USD1,100 in cash while the remaining amount will be made available for goods and services the person needs to make a safe home.
Governmental data lately unveiled that every nine days, a woman is killed by her partner, making rates of domestic violence increase, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We know that financial hardship as well as economic abuse, which may involve interfering with work or controlling or withholding money, reduces women’s ability to acquire and use money and makes it difficult to leave violent relationships.” Elaborated the Minister for women’s safety, Anne Ruston.
To some Australians, though this decision will give victims aid, it will fail to address the root of the violence issue.
Executive director of the Victorian Women’s Trust stressed that Australia needs to have a large debate about the “blokey” culture that constantly puts men in a position of power. In her statements, Crooks questioned the moral and ethical policy of the state that leads women to go through traumatizing experiences.
