Tunisia’s parliament speaker and leader of Ennahda movement called on MPs resume work and declared the assembly in session, as political turmoil in Tunisia continues with President Kais Saied’s suspension of parliament since July 25.
“The office of the Assembly of the Representatives of the People is in permanent session,” Ghannouchi wrote in a tweet.
Saied named Najla Bouden Romdhan as prime minister, amidst growing pressure over his power grip, earlier this week.
Saied, instructed Romdhan to form the government as soon as possible, announced a press release from the Presidency of the Republic.
The President repeatedly insisted that his actions are in line with the country’s post-revolution constitution, which allows the head of state to take “exceptional measures” in case of an “imminent danger” to national security, a highly contentious reading of the constitution.
