Morocco will start manufacturing the anti-COVID 19 Sinopharm vaccines next December, informed sources confirmed to Hespress.
The government and the pharmaceutical company set December months ago as part of the agreements signed by Khalid Ait Taleb, and Sothema CEO Lamia Tazi in early July before King Mohammed VI.
“This project is of great importance for both Morocco and China in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Jengzhen, who was speaking by videoconference from Beijing during the ceremony of launching and signing of agreements related to the project of fill-finish manufacturing of the Sinopharm vaccine in Morocco, chaired by King Mohammed VI at the Royal Palace in Fez.
The public-private partnership will begin in the short term with a monthly production capacity of 5 million doses of anti-Covid19 vaccines per month.
The CEO of the Sothema group, Lamia Tazi, told Hespress that “the date scheduled for the launch of vaccine manufacturing is suspended until now.”
“All regulatory procedures are lasting and nothing has changed regarding the process,” she added.
For his part, Moulay Said Afif, a member of the scientific committee on vaccination confirmed to Hespress that the country will begin manufacturing the anti-Covid19 Sinopharm vaccine starting next December in the laboratories of the Sothema company.
This project worth USD500 million, about EUR421 million, does not only meet the national vaccination campaign’s needs but also contributes to make Morocco the pharmacist of Africa.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said Morocco is among 14 African countries that achieved the global vaccination target before the end of September.
Currently, the kingdom has fully vaccinated more than 17 million people while over 21 million have received their first Covid-19 vaccine shot, according to the Ministry of Health’s data.
