Sudan state media report “failed” coup attempt

Sudan state media reported a “failed” coup attempt early on Tuesday, as the country struggles with a fragile transition since ousting former longtime president Omar al-Bashir in 2019.

“There has been a failed coup attempt, the people should confront it,” state television said, without elaborating.

Government and military sources told AFP that the attempt involved a group of officers who were “immediately suspended” after they “failed” to take over the state media building.

Sudan is currently led by a joint civilian and military transitional government, installed in the aftermath of Bashir’s overthrow and tasked with overseeing a return to civilian rule.

More than two years after the formation of the joint government, the country continues to struggle with economic problems inherited from the Bashir regime as well as deep divisions among different factions.

In recent months, the government has undertaken a series of tough economic reforms to qualify for debt relief from the International Monetary Fund, including slashing subsidies, which many Sudanese deemed too harsh.
