UN Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Alexander Ivanko, the former special representative of the secretary-general for Western Sahara, to lead the team overseeing the liquidation of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in the Sahara (MINURSO), following the expiration of its mandate on Oct. 31 without renewal.
UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric announced the appointment during the secretary-general’s daily press briefing on Friday at UN headquarters.
Dujarric said the liquidation team would oversee all activities related to ending the mission’s presence in the territory, under the guidance and support of the UN Department of Operational Support.
The process will include the withdrawal of military observers from the mission’s team sites, as well as the removal or disposal of UN-owned equipment and assets, in accordance with applicable rules and guidelines, he added.
Dujarric was responding to a question about the next phase of the UN presence in the Sahara after MINURSO’s mandate expired without a Security Council decision to renew it.
