UAE hopes for diplomatic breakthrough as US-Iran war threats intensify

The United Arab Emirates said Sunday it hopes diplomatic efforts will prevent renewed fighting between the United States and Iran but warned it remains prepared for further escalation.

“We’re hoping that there is a diplomatic breakthrough,” Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the UAE president, told the Manama Dialogue conference in Bahrain, adding that the country was “braced for the worst.”

His remarks followed renewed threats from US President Donald Trump, who said Saturday that Washington still had “one or two” Iranian nuclear sites to address.

Diplomatic contacts have continued through Qatar, where Iranian envoys held consultations following meetings in Tehran.

US Assistant Secretary of State Donald Blome said Washington remained open to negotiations but was prepared to pursue other options.

The conflict began February 28 with joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran, followed by Iranian attacks on Gulf states. An April ceasefire halted intense fighting, but subsequent diplomatic efforts have failed to secure lasting peace.
